Mount Ololokwe
Mount Ololokwe, also known as Ol Donyo Sabache, is a striking flat-topped mountain located near Sabache Village in Samburu County, about 150 km north of Nanyuki. Rising to approximately 2,000 metres above sea level, it is one of Kenya’s most recognizable mountains and is considered sacred by the Samburu people.
The mountain features dramatic cliffs, indigenous forests, open grasslands, and spectacular panoramic views stretching across the Samburu plains, the Matthews Range, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba National Reserve. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is Africa’s first Indigenous community-owned and managed elephant sanctuary. Located in the Namunyak Community Conservancy at the foot of the Matthews Range, the sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and eventually releases orphaned and abandoned elephant calves back into the wild. It officially opened in 2016 and is managed by the Samburu community.
Visitors have the opportunity to learn about elephant conservation while observing rescued elephant calves during their feeding sessions. Each visit is guided by knowledgeable Samburu keepers who share the stories of the elephants and explain the rehabilitation process. Human interaction with the elephants is intentionally kept to a minimum to prepare them for life in the wild.
